Here are a few tips that will help you better navigate the first year of college! Hope they help!
1. Getting Enough Sleep
Getting enough sleep is crucial in determining the extent of a college student’s success. Consistently getting enough sleep directly correlates to your mental, emotional, and physical performance. Sleep serves as an aid that restores your energy, boosts your immune system and fights off illness, balances hormones, improves brain function, boosts your metabolism, strengthens memory, improves clear and creative thought processing, produces a more positive mood, and more. Be sure to get the proper amount of sleep in order to do well physically and mentally!
2. Budgeting
Budgeting is very important for college students because it is the first time that most students are out on their own, away from their parents, and having to allot money to various aspects of life. Having enough money for all your monthly expenses, such as gas, groceries, and spending money, is not easy and requires you to make a budget. This means that you need to determine how much money you earn or get from your parents each month and then decide how much will be allocated to each area so that you are able to fill up your gas tank when needed or buy the groceries you need every week!
3. Supplies & Additional Costs
One thing to consider when entering college is getting the supplies you need for each class. Most classes require students to buy or rent textbooks. You should always plan ahead! Check online at the Chapman Bookstore Website and submit your student ID number or course so that it can show you the required texts of the courses you are taking. Students are able to buy or rent books online or in the Chapman Textbook Store. Sometimes there are even options for purchasing new or used books, depending on the book. In order to save money, Amazon is also a great resource for buying books. The key is to find all of your options and pick the best one for you as soon as possible! Keep in mind that all other students are searching for books as well so the number of books are limited. Also, shipping takes time! Normally, textbooks take at least a few days before they can be delivered to you.
It is always good to keep extra pencils and notebooks on you, but it is also important to keep in mind that some professors may require you to obtain scantrons or green-books for exams. Students are able to purchase these testing supplies at the Chapman Textbook store, located behind the Chapman Graduate Law School, or the Chapman’s Agora Giftshop, located on main campus.
If you are not sure about what supplies or books you need for a class, email your professors! They can let you know what you need to get ahead of time. It is good to plan accordingly!
