Welcome to Chapman's Center for Global Education! The CGE is located just down the street from main campus and oversees all global education and students!

What is the Center for Global Education?

The Center for Global Education (CGE) is the office that oversees all international aspects of Chapman University. They are in charge of all study abroad opportunities the university has to offer. The CGE provides support to any student who has come to Chapman as an international exchange student or any Chapman student traveling to another country for an abroad experience. This support consists of hosting events in conjunction with other clubs or organizations on campus to promote international events, helping international students find their fit at Chapman, helping Chapman students find the perfect place to go abroad, the application process, being accepted and preparing for life abroad, and returning to Chapman life after being away. Chapman offers several abroad opportunities for people of all interests, such as travel courses over interterm and summer, international internships over the summer, and full semesters abroad.

Q & A

Here are a few questions and answers from the Center for Global Education Office that might be helpful when considering an abroad experience!

Q: What is the Center for Global Education? What services do you provide?

A: The CGE consists of all international everything! Our services provide any needed support to both international students and Chapman students in their time here on campus and abroad.

Q: Is anyone able to go abroad? What are the requirements/limitations?

A: In order to be eligible to go abroad, students must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA, except for travel courses that do not require a minimum GPA. Depending on the type of abroad experience (travel course, semester abroad, or international internship) grade level standing requirement varies. For example, in order to go abroad for the semester, you must be of sophomore standing.

Q: How much does it cost? Do scholarships, grant money, or financial aid work towards the total cost?

A: Each program varies as far as cost is concerned; the longer the program, the more expensive the cost, in general. However, federal and state aid may be applied to the overall program cost. There are various scholarships that you can apply for that go directly toward the total cost of the program. In addition, there are a few programs that even include airfare to and from the destination. Q: How do you decide where you want to go? Does your major impact where you can go?

A: Most students begin their search by major, but there are so many programs offered that everyone will find something that interests them. Something unique to Chapman is that all credits earned abroad are actual Chapman credits and not transfer credits. Also, all abroad courses count for a letter grade which is not the case at all schools.

Q: Does going abroad affect your four-year plan or graduating on time?

A: Absolutely not! The most important thing is that you plan ahead and work with your academic counselors. An abroad experience is available to every student, you just need to prepare and plan ahead of time. Going abroad does not set you back in anyway and some students are even able to graduate early after going abroad.

Q: If you cannot go abroad for an entire semester, are there any other options for going abroad?

A: Yes! Chapman offers travel courses over the summer and during interterm that do not interfere with semester studies. International internships are also available over the summer. There are several abroad opportunities for every student’s schedule and four-year plan.

Testimonials!

“What I gained from study abroad was an in-depth and immersive experience of what it meant to be a Japanese citizen from the perspective of my professors, peers, and passersby; and what it meant to be a global citizen. With aid of the Gilman Scholarship, I learned about a culture I had been drawn to my whole life and in doing so, I was able change myself as a student and a person.”

- Joscelyn, Tokyo, Japan

“My experience studying abroad opened my eyes to a new culture, a new education system, and a new way of life. It taught me to cherish experiences over possessions, the true benefits of travel, and that vulnerability is one of the most important prerequisites for learning and growing as a human being.”

- Kevin, Wellington, New Zealand
