STUDENT PSYCHOLOGICAL COUNSELING SERVICES (S.P.C.S.)

The mission of Student Psychological Counseling Services (S.P.C.S.) is to assist students in effectively functioning in the university environment by assessing and supporting their psychological well-being as they pursue any and all personal and academic goals. Their services provide expertise, acceptance, and objective guidance in dealing with personal problems. The counseling services at S.P.C.S. offers students the opportunity to look at themselves, their environment, and their relationships, and facilitate positive change to enhance their emotional, relational and psychological well-being.

Some students may face a rough transition into college or face other rough patches throughout their college experience, but S.P.C.S. is here to help. They provide a safe space where students can express themselves and ask for advice in fighting through their issues in order to succeed socially, academically, emotionally and mentally.

SERVICES OFFERED:

Individual Counseling

One-on-one sessions with a counselor, offered to students who meet the criteria for short-term counseling. Students who are in need of long-term counseling are assisted in finding resources off campus.

Couples and Family Counseling

Couple counseling is offered to couples who are both enrolled at Chapman. Counseling sessions can involve families or other important members of a student’s life on a limited basis with both student and counselor permission.

Groups and Workshops

Groups and/or workshops are offered to students interested in forming a group. Groups and workshops have been offered by S.P.C.S. on a number of issues including stress, anxiety, self-image/self-esteem, social confidence, and relationships.

Psychiatric Services

Some psychiatric services are offered to students that are active clients of S.P.C.S. who have never seen a psychiatrist or have previously seen one but are no longer in their care. Referrals to the psychiatrist are made by the clinical staff and aimed to serve as a bridge to students seeking outside community psychiatric care.

Training and Consultation

Through S.P.C.S., staff members develop and lead programs and trainings in the residence halls for various campus groups organized by students, faculty and staff and at University orientation programs. It also offers consultation to student groups, faculty, and staff upon request.  Examples include how to help a friend, how to support a student in crisis while also setting appropriate limits, how to solve interpersonal conflict in a group, or how to recognize students with problems and how to refer them to the counseling center.

Even if you are fortunate enough to never need to visit Chapman's Student Psychological Counseling Services, you will most likely know other students who do. It is important to know the warning signs that another student is struggling. S.P.C.S is open to referrals from students and staff and even offers a student concern intervention team.
